The National Institute of Health states that 20 million Americans experience some type of peripheral neuropathy. Neuropathy is a condition that causes damage to the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system refers to the nerves that are located away from the main nerve receptors in the central nervous system, which is made up of the brain and spinal cord.

Understanding Neuropathy
Neuropathy is considered a form of nerve disease damage. If this is not treated correctly, you could experience long-term nerve damage. Nerve damage can cause problems to a single nerve or multiple clusters of nerves. This can lead to different pain symptoms and treatment methods.
Causes Of Neuropathy
There are many potential causes of neuropathy, however it is important to recognize that this condition does not spontaneously occur. Many patients develop nerve pain as a symptom of another condition, most commonly diabetes. Some of the conditions that may cause neuropathy are as follows:
- Diabetes (more than half of the individuals who have diabetes will develop neuropathy).
- Spinal cord injuries.
- Chemotherapy (and tumors, if a tumor develops on or presses against a clump of nerves).
- Infections, including hepatitis, leprosy, HIV, and Lyme disease.
- Multiple sclerosis.
- Arthritis.
- Bone marrow disorders, including monoclonal gammopathies and lymphoma.
- Sports Injuries
- Inflammation
- Other diseases, including kidney disease, connective tissue disorders, liver disease or hypothyroidism.
Common Symptoms of Neuropathy
Neuropathy symptoms range from moderate to severe depending on the nerves that have seen damaged and what treatment you have already tried. No patient will receive the same treatment in our clinic because each person is unique. Some patients deal with constant pain due to their nerves being inflamed. Other patients only experience pain when they are agitated from exercise, poor posture, improper modalities, etc. We have even had patients deal with the pain that comes and goes seemingly at random.
Over 100 types of peripheral neuropathy have been identified in patients. Each type comes with its own symptoms and cause, which we will work with you to determine. The most common symptoms related to neuropathy include:
- Pain in the foot and ankles
- Numbness and tingling in extremities and limbs
- Limited mobility or range of motion
- Inflammation in the calves, knees, and shoulders
- Fatigue and chronic pain
- Headaches
- Weakness and shaking
- Stiff muscles
Neuropathy Treatment
Depending on the cause of the nerve damage, treatments will vary for each patient and their unique physical and mental health needs. Many patients with neuropathy start with over-the-counter pain relievers which often don’t help with the pain. If you are looking to avoid stronger medications and improve your function, chiropractic treatment may be the solution. Typically we find electrostimulation and massage therapy treatments are one of the best remedies to help treat the pain without the need for pain medications.
